The Tan Yiek

facebook instagram google twitter tumblr linkedin
The last time I visited Yut Kee was 7 years back, where it was located on Jalan Tun H S Lee, in the middle of many random shops, selling the best Hainanese Chicken Chop and Roast Pork in Malaysia.
Their years of lucrative business has give them the opportunity to relocate into a new and bigger space, which able to accommodate more crowds today.

The current location of Yut Kee Restaurant is in Jalan Kamunting, few minutes drive-away from Sheraton Hotel / The Row:Butter+Beans / League of Captains.

Since Yut Kee Restaurant renowned for their signature dishes such as Chicken Chop, Roast Pork and Marble Cake- many locals, even tourists, never fail to pay them a visit. Resulted that, several unfortunate diners have to queue for seats while waiting for their name to be call by the host.
Queuing outside of the shop ain't fun because Malaysia is in the tropical zone...
Crazy eaters from all over the place, digging at their plates...
Customer turnover pretty high from last visit until today!

Picture of Yut Kee's menu! Have a look at here first before heading to the place!

1- Chicken Chop (Signature Dish of Yut Kee Restaurant)
The portion they gave was pretty generous. Despite the high-turnover, their consistency for portion is excellent and worth the value. The protein is succulent but the gravy seems to lack of its own identity...

2- Roast Pork of 2 slices.
This dish does not serve by them everyday. As you can see in the menu list, it only appear on sale during weekends, so it is a MUST try item! The roast pork was fantastic especially the skin was roasting to a perfect crisp and the flavor explode all over your mouth. While the side dish remains the same.

3- Kaya Roll
Wonder what Hainanese people back then eat for their breakfast? Well, a slice of toasted bread served with butter and Hainanese Kaya. This kaya is different compared to the commercialized kayas in the market...

4- Roti Babi
Yeap, Roti Babi is the name! I can't help it but I have been laughing my ass off while typing the name of this dish...However, this dish did not fuse perfectly into my taste bud... First, it was very oily for me. Second, the fillings inside the bread wasn't enough for me...

5- Lum Mee
One heck of a noodle dish. The gravy is the same as the one in Chicken Chop, Pretty ordinary to me. What makes this dish unique was all because of the vast ingredients thrown into one plate.

6- Marble Cake
Apparently, it is a must to order the marble cake in this restaurant, because they are king bakers when it comes to this Marble Cake. Honestly, marble cake from all over different stores produce the similar taste and texture.

Ordered too much since we come here like once every decade?
Pretty worth it. I managed to finish my chicken chop, roast pork and one slice of kaya roll!
Feel like puking afterwards!

Servers serving non-stop to keep the customer turnover rate high, so that they can gain more profit in one day of service.
More over, I'm impressed that they could manage to serve the food in time despite the demands from big crowd... This place, seriously, a veteran.

Nothing much but a simple post for today~~~

Was clueless on what to have right after a decent dinner, so I decided to drive around in the bustling SS15's shop lots.
Fatbaby Ice Cream caught my attention and I have decided to try them out since they are serving ice cream!

FatBaby Ice Cream located same row as the newly open Oregi (A hookah bar and restaurant)! And opposite of FatBaby Ice cream will be their competitor, Sangkaya Ice Cream that serve unique coconut ice cream size of one human's palm.

My first impression when walking in was already mind-blown and heart-melted when the staff gave a warm welcome and their interior was simply simple contemporary design with lot's of hand-drawn board with chalks nailed to the wall.

Menu items and price list at the wall before purchasing.

There are several flavours in there, they allow you to try before you order. Just like every ice-cream parlour that allows the customers to try first before they make a final decision.

Love the clock design!

As I was waiting for my waffles, one of the staff is busy preparing for their staff meal. He did his best to stack the waffles properly so that the waffles tower will not fall.

The final outcome, and everyone was crazy about it! The customers around cheer for the success of the waffle tower and taking the chance to take picture of it!

Before I forgot, this menu item will not be available unless you make special arrangement with FatBaby Ice Cream's team!

My waffle with Early Grey and Caramel Vanilla Ice Cream!

:Verdict:
Apart from Inside Scoop, this is another alternative spot to enjoy your ice cream ! Low turnover rate compare to Inside Scoop meaning you can sit and chill longer ! Great team can be seen! Weird part of their organization is that they planned such that the shop only opens on Friday to Sunday only, which I have no idea why they do so.

Was there in Empire Damansara, alone - solo queue for the most anticipated Japanese honey toast in a small shop name called Haraju Cube, located at first floor of the mall.
Going in alone is easy to get a table for yourself because you don't have to find a table with more than one seat right or perhaps any and every table is the same so screw it - right?, but but but- its kinda sad, strange and awkward to savour this unique toast alone while most of the customers crave for the cube in couple or party.

Well, going there alone or in group doesn't really matter to me. What matters the most is about their best selling menu item.
I did not manage to take a picture of their menu, but their average price is around RM 25.00++ (the cube toast itself only) and plus the Haraju Cube's milk which cost RM 6.80 per bottle that comes in 3 different flavour respectively.

As for me, I ordered the Azuki-Matcha Honey Toast (RM 25.90) plus Haraju Milk Coffee flavour (RM 6.90), so, form the equation and you will get the total ! [Do not forget about the tax :) ]

Probably you wonder how to eat this huge block? Make sure both of your hands equipped with fork and knife, slice off any one side of the toast (the brown part where you can see from the side.) Take it off and enjoy!
Honestly, nobody eat the bread skin and it taste as if its already infused with air which is a bit off-crunchy and texture.
The highlight of this foodie is when you fork into the middle, lots of love inside there :D
The smell of the caramelized honey loaf, covered with whipped cream and ice cream of your choice.

Almost lose my appetite half way through because of the amount of whipped cream is too much....

:Verdict:
Overall is not that bad, just that remember to go in pair or bigger group so that you can finish the cube easily compared to a solo try hard to finish em'...which might feel sick of it after a few bites....
Price wise, slightly disappointed for the honey cube but I guess it was meant to be - but I have to admit that the portion for one honey toast is enough for a couple.
GO early if you want to enjoy the honey toast with comfort .

If you are a fan of The Red Beanbag of Publika, you will definitely love this (Yellow Brick Road) because they have the same concept that you are asking for, except - it is on another different location.
To cut long story short, the coffee and cakes are identical as The Red Beanbag because the head barista, Jason Loo was the one behind the cast. As for the food, Yellow Brick Road adapt 80% similarity from The Red Beanbag and produce another few different meal to represent it's uniqueness to stand out as Yellow Brick Road.

Was here on 1st of May. The queue is crazy. Waited for almost an hour or so.
Patience is virtue.
Oh by the way, there's a new pancake house by Yellow Brick Road - incoming!
Wicked Den....

When there's heavy crowd in the restaurant, everybody are encourage to practice space-sharing. There's no chance for you to get privacy space as everybody are here to dine, unless you are lucky that the server pick a good spot for you.

The foodies! Most of them are very similar to Red Beanbag, just that the price is bit pricier!
-Mr Cheesy Mac (Macaroni with Cheese)
-I Wanna Be Kaya (Toast sprinkle with nuts, fruits and served with kaya syrup)
-Egg Norwegian (Two Poached Eggs with smoked salmon and fried onion at the bottom.)
-Baked Cheese (Beef and savoury inside, baked with cheese.)
Average price is at RM 25.00 per Item in this picture (not inclusive of service charge and GST yet).

After our lovely brunch, we head to the back of the restaurant for some photoshoot session :)

:Verdict:
The price of several menu item is slightly higher than Red Beanbag(well, depending on which items). The restaurant have heavy crowd due to its rating and its previous achievement gained by the Head Barista, the food presentation and taste are constantly consistent, so if you ever wanted to try YBR, make a reservation or be there early!

Have you tried Hainanese version of Chicken Chop? If you have not try any of them yet - well, now- it is time to try one yourself or with your friends and family !
I have to confess that the Hainanese did an excellent job on creating their own variation of chicken chop, it is different compare to the western version, in terms of flavour and the side dishes that serve along in it.

I was able to discovered this restaurant however, the traffic at the area does not seems to be smooth due to the restaurant located near Port Klang, thus many trucks were busy transporting goods out of it. Obviously, I need to follow the flow of the traffic.

I had hard time finding this shop, because of the trucks had blocked my view from the opposite route. Thankfully, the locals over there are helpful enough to get me here.

Sorry for the blurry image.

The shop directly facing hustling road, so if you want to get a place for your car, I suggest you to find a car park behind the shop lots. You will need to find a way in order to get a place for your carrrrrrr
Without any further ado, I immediately get a seat and ordered a black coffee ('kopitiam' style) and their signature dish. Hainanese Chicken Chop.

RM 1.40 per cup.

RM 8.50 per plate. Portion is proportionate to the cost of a dish. Their chicken chop glazed with sweet delicious tomato sauce and served along with potatoes and green peas.

This makes a perfect combo to fulfil your stomach capacity. Hainanese Chicken Chop accompanied with sweet, dark roasted black coffee~ Moreover, the price of every menu item is affordable and worth a journey to dine-in.

On the other hand, their restaurant also known for other dishes such as Kaya & Margarine Toast, Hailam Mee and Hainanese Fish & Chip.
Honestly, I'm not a big of fan of those dishes, however - you can refer to another source for more information:
